Are you a cat lover? Like cake and cookies? Love tea? Perhaps paying a visit to a cat cafe would be an idea. Last week we paid a visit to Cat Cafe KatDeau in The Netherlands.
Cat Cafe’s are perhaps the new hype. It is a cafe like any other cafe, offering food and drinks with only one difference, there are cats living and running around in the same space.
Not For Everyone
Having cats running around where you are enjoying a lunch or a hot drink isn’t for everyone. The common complaint is of hygiene. Cats are however part of many households as are dogs and other animals. As long as you don’t share the food with them, you will be very alright.
For cat lovers this is however the place to be. Cat lovers don’t mind getting a few extra cat hairs on their already cat-haired clothing or a cuddle and kiss from cats during their time spending in the cafe. It is really top when a cat lover can enjoy their favourite drink or snack while cuddling kitties.
Difficult To Start a Cat Cafe
It is still difficult however to start a cat cafe in most countries because of the hygiene rules of food directives of each country. A cafe or restaurant generally isn’t allowed to have animals in the same space for hygiene reasons. Animals and their coat can transport a lot of bad bacteria. The same goes for their feces and urine, but so can humans, so I think it is more of a thing in the head.
Because of those same hygiene rules, some cat cafes do not allow you to touch the cat while residing in the restaurant. They do this by putting the cats behind glass or other forms of protection. I honestly feel they should be allowed to go freely. Animals are alike human beings that should go freely where they can go.
Cat Cafe KatDeau
Cat Cafe KatDeau finally got a license to open up shop after some good conversations with the local authorities and opened its doors at the 20th of August 2016. The owner managed to get it the way she wanted, by introducing a cat with the least amount of fur: The Sphinx Cat.
Sphinx Cats have little hair or fur and are known to be the “naked cat”. They actually have a tiny layer of tiny hairs on their body, so they aren’t really naked in that sense. Because of their little amount of cat hair, they are ideally for a cat cafe where hygiene is important. Cat hairs won’t be everywhere and those with cat hair allergy will not be affected as much as with normal cat breeds.
The Sphinx cats are the owners own private cats that she shares with the world. The cat cafe is on the lower floor of her own house.
Cat Cafe KatDeau has currently 5 Sphinx cats that walk around freely inside the cafe and have a cat door to the owners living quarters upstairs.
Their names are:
- Borrel (2013)
- Nootje (2013)
- Cashew (2015)
- Pretzel (2016)
- Tuc (2016)
The name of the Cat Cafe was made out of the words Kat (Dutch for Cat) and (Ca)Deau (otherwise known as present). The name of the cafe has much to do with the products they sell through their web shop that are meant as presents to other cat lovers.
Make A Reservation To Be Sure
To have a drink you might be lucky by just popping in on a day it is open, but if you want a more advanced high tea with cakes, cookies and sandwiches, you should reserve a spot and time frame. We had done such, because we wanted to spend a lot of time filming, photographing and spending time with family and friends.
There isn’t very much room for people, but that keeps it personal and fun with 5 cats around. A lot of interaction happens when you sit there. Cats that come and take a look at what sort of visitors they got today and generally love to be cuddled.
Continuous Interaction With The Cats
One of them wanted to hide within a shawl and sit there cuddling up to a visitor. Another kept begging for food, something we cannot answer. Two of them slept most of the time, while another played with all sorts of toys in the room. When the owner came out with some cat food and cat snacks, they were all suddenly awake and well and looking for her.
The offered drinks (we had tea of course) and amazingly well presented high-tea cakes, cookies, crackers and yogurt was of high-standard, and not to forget, home-made by the owner.
We enjoyed ourselves every minute of our two-hour visit at KatDeau.

We loved our stay at Cat Cafe KatDeau in Hengelo (OV), The Netherlands and hope to return some day to check up with the lovely cats. We had an excellent stay with nice food and drinks and many cuddles with cats. It was our first experience with a Sphinx cat, so it was a really cool experience. They are not scary and they are just acting like cats.
The owner was very nice and we had a nice talk with her too.
