Why Do Cats Like Laptops?

July 3, 2018 by steven

Why Do Cats Like Laptops and often sleep on them you may ask? The simple answer to this is because they want to become or are very smart. No seriously, it is a great warm place to cuddle up to and fall asleep.

Cats Are Smart

Cats are smart creatures. They know where to be to get your attention. They certainly know where it is nice and warm to sleep upon and they also like to help you out with whatever thing you were thinking to do. I am pretty sure that, given that we would give them the chance to that, they would know how to order their sweeties online and communicate with their friends.

All jokes aside, cats are smart creatures and there are some basic things they get attracted to when it is about laptops, PC’s, receivers and other “unusual” places we find cats upon.

Cats Love Warm Places

Even though some cat breeds got a lot of hair or fur, they generally have a problem when it comes down to keeping that heat around them. Their fur is actually there to protect them from some forms of weather, protect their skin and to be pretty.

Cats come from the warmer places on this earth such as the jungle and are therefore not really used to icy cold winters or dreadful wet climates. Their fur does not protect them well from a lot of rain or other wetness such as snow. A lot of wind will also be too cold and freezing temperatures will turn their wet fur into an ice ball.Cats Love Warm Places

Heat Sources

It’s for these reasons that we see cats near heat sources, cuddled up close to the heater. You will find cats in the window when the sun is out and about.

Also the less natural sources of heat are not left in peace. While a cooker would be too hot, they still stick their noses into or near the oven or wood stove. When we burn wood in the winter in our fireplace, the cats join us and lay themselves directly under, behind or in front of the fireplace.

Receivers, amplifiers and other equipment that has those holes on top to cool the specific equipment down, are neither left in peace. These heat sources are widely used by all sorts of felines that lay themselves on top of them.

Even hot motororised vehicles get a similar treatment, when they just arrived from making many miles on the motorway. The same doesn’t go for the now more usual electric vehicles that do not generate much heat under the hood.

This is why it is important to install a warm cozy cat bed in your home for your cats.

Laptops and computers are no exception to the rule.

Why Do Cats Like Laptops?

Being on top of a heat source is just one of the many reasons to be on your laptop as a cat. After all, there are moments you just wanted to start writing that article or email or work on that project. Oh dear, your lovely kitty has laid herself down on it, purring away. Why Do Cats Like Laptops?

They even lay themselves on the less comfortable keyboard while you are writing your Facebook post. Is this still about the heat source you may wonder?

Well in case of laptops it certainly is. Usually laptops do not come with much of a cooling system and so the entire device heats up big time under heavy work. Perhaps writing that document didn’t generate all that much heat, but playing that 3D game surely will. Heat is one thing, but are there other reasons for your cat to lie down there?

“Arghh… I am trying to type this email and now I cannot reach the letters on the keyboard!”

A kitty on your keyboard also means you need to do something about your cat. Perhaps you stroke her a couple of times before you try to throw her gracefully off without destroying much of the hard work you didn’t save yet.

Now it is no longer just only about the heat source, but also about getting cuddles. Cats love to be cuddled and will cuddle you back. A cat on your laptop is a cat asking for attention. As smart as cats are, they have figured that if they will be in the way of you, you will have to cuddle them there and than at that very moment you run into them.

They perform that sort of behaviour everywhere. They stand right behind you when you are in the kitchen, so that you trip over them and feel sorry for them. They lie on your bed, they sit on your sofa or chair, they sit on anything that could be of use to you, so that you will have to interact with them.

Interaction with them is though something we really love with our cats, don’t we? Just make sure that your laptop or receiver doesn’t overheat and your work is always saved, before you let your cat walk over your keyboard. In fact, just always save your work wherever possible, as to prevent possible problems in the future.

Cats don’t make a difference between the time of the day to get cuddles or find a warm place. They neither know about you save a document or not. They know when they want cuddles and they know where it is warm enough for them to take a well-deserved nap.

Conclusion

So why do cats like laptops? Simply because of the nice warm heat source as well as getting some free cuddles along the way. It’s not just laptops that are being invaded by them. You will also find cats sleeping or sitting on computer’s, receivers, directly above or nearby a heating source in winter. Even a car’s motor under the hood will be used by cats.

Pay attention to where your cat is going to sleep or sit next time. Also, pay attention that your documents are saved, so you don’t lose any important data while your cat is going for a well-deserved nap on your keyboard.
