For our own four cats and the three to four cats from the RSPCA we consume a lot of cat products. Not just a bit, but A LOT. Toys get destroyed in seconds, cat litter needs refreshing every so often, cat food goes by kilo’s both dry and wet. We used to look for these products in a various amount of shops both online and offline. We nowadays use pretty much only one physical, relatively local, animal products store, called the Maskot Dyrebutikk in Farsund.
Maskot Dyrebutikk, Farsund
Farsund is only a small town in Norway, but has one of the bigger animal product stores with a huge variety of products. They are not so much of a massive quantities seller, but you do get to choose between many brands and types, which is what makes it so fun to visit this store.
Kind Helpful Sellers
The two owners and other sellers in this store are extremely kind and very helpful. They know very well what they are talking about and got experience from their own pets. When a product is missing, they will always do their best to look whether it is available for order between their many different distributors. This is what has made it possible for us to do business with them.
They know really much about both cats and dogs and in most cases also about other animals that are held as pets. They know the inns and outs and the positives and the negatives of each product they are selling as they test them out before putting them out for sale.
No Animals For Sale
We are strictly against selling animals through animal stores and Maskot Dyrebutikk has the same opinion – They do not sell animals through their store. The problem with animal sales through animal stores is that there can be many things wrong with the pets through the way they have been raised or the way they are taken care of. We feel that animals that are bred for sale in animal stores are being treated as merchandise and not as individual beings with a right to live and thrive.
Lots of Products
Maskot Dyrebutikk has lots and lots of products. They have a large assortment of dry kibble for cats and dogs from big brands, both from the big pet food manufacturers as well as from the smaller organic food producers. They got two large freezers full of frozen meat products for dogs. There is an entire wall of lots and lots of snacks.
There is a whole section for cat and dog toys. There are beds and cages, there are cat trees. You can find great solutions for your pet hold such as entry flaps (cat/dog door), belts for both cats and dogs to go outside, ID tags for knowing who ‘owns’ the animal and reflectors for when outside in the darkness.
They got lots of products to do with cleaning of the by-products with animals, such as cleaning agents for urine, feces and vomit. They got all sorts of brushes for grooming fur and scissors for nail clipping. They got also products for other animals such as rabbits, rats, gerbils, hamsters, tortoises, fish and birds.
Not a problem when a product is missing. The kind sellers will look up whether your missing product is available through one of their many distributors. In most cases they manage to order a product for you, even in smaller quantities than the usual “take 10 bags”. This is what is making it for us so easy to do business with them. The prices are neither bad, at least not for Norwegian pricing (everything is more expensive in Norway compared to a lot of other countries in the world).
