We have got usually around 5-8 cats in and around our house. Some of these cats use the cat litter more often than those that go outside. In winter they generally all use the toilet, as snow isn’t a good place for their business. So good cat litter is important to us.
Product: Tidy Cats – Instant Action Clumping Cat Litter
Cat Litter Type: clay – clumping cat litter
Fantastic clumping cat litter. Works well with big cat families, because it has good odor control. Dusting is less than most other litter.
It has often been a nightmare with different types of cat litter. The smell is the most obvious one, apart from cleaning it daily or two times a day, some cat litter simply smells quickly and needs total replacement. Other times it gets dusty that makes you and your cat cough. And then again sometimes they add these extreme scents to cat litter that make you sneeze every time you stick your nose in that litter box to clean the clumps.
Talking about clumps, a lot of cat litter does not clump, even though they say so on the packaging. So you end up with a very wet and messy litter box that just needs even more often total replacement.
You could say that we have tried many types of cat litter. So we are than also rather pleased to have found one of the best litters yet (and available to us here in Norway), namely Tidy Cats – Instant Action Clumping Cat Litter, produced by Purina.
Purina Tidy Cats Instant Action cat litter comes for us in Norway in carton boxes of 12 kg, while in the US you can buy them as small as 9 kg jugs or 15 kg buckets. The grain size is a bit bigger than most other cat litters, making it easier to scoop and separate clumps from the rest of the litter. It is however not a bio-degradable cat litter as there are chemicals in it to make it clump better and mask the ammonia smells of cat urine and feces.
Clumping Cat Litter
Tidy Cats Instant Action clumps fluids very well and poo gets immediately covered by the litter when the cat covers up. It is important to clean your cat litter often, preferably at a minimal of one time a day.
Unfortunately not all cats cover up properly, but that is easily solved by either scooping it out or covering it yourself. As soon as it is covered, the smell disappears straight away.
At least in my version of the Tidy Cats – Instant Action we can buy here in Norway, the cat litter clumps really fantastically well. It is therefore very easy to scoop out the clumps. No total refresh needed until you are about 2-4 weeks in.
In our case one of the toilets is a giant container that can handle 40 liters, but houses a carton box of 12kg at a time. Every day we scoop for clumps and after about two weeks we also add some more of a new refill carton box. After four weeks we clean the litter box properly and renew the cat litter entirely.
The cat litter isn’t odour free, but has actually only a very slight scent just enough to take away the cat urine and feces odor. The scent isn’t very strong as in other cat litters, so that helps a lot for any allergic reactions. It actually reminds me of a washing machine soap I use.
The biggest disadvantage in my eyes is the tracking, the big grains stick in their paws and they take it with through the entire house. The solution against that is to place those special mats that keep the litter in one area and not spread it through the entire house. We used to buy small door mats from a shop like IKEA, simply because they are cheap and help to keep the cat litter at bay. Because they are cheap they can also be easily replaced.
There are however special cat litter mats for sale that really keep the cat litter at bay.
The other problem with the cat litter, is that tracking also means the cat has the litter on their fur or in their paws, which ends up inside the cat when they groom their fur. The question is how bad this is for the cat.
Dusting of cat litter is one of the main problems with all types of cat litter. The only ones that don’t do that, are the bigger grained versions such as silica gel and pine cone or wood based litters. This cat litter isn’t dust-free, even if they claim to be so. I often have to look away when I scoop it or at least not breathe deeply. But in a well ventilated room (which is what they always refer to in the instructions), you should not have any problem.
To be honest, I have really seen worse. Really much worse. Some types of cat litter dust really much that you will be able to find a layer of dust on your cat and everything it comes across.
- Clumping Cat Litter, it really clumps well
- Minimal Dusting
- Minimal scent
- Truly Odour Free
- Slightly dusty
- Contains a scent, so it is not scentless or without parfume
- Relatively more expensive
Although more expensive, Tidy Cats – Instant Action is a really good cat litter with little dusting, good odor control and excellent clumping efforts. We simply love it! But for those who are still not sure, it is really worth a try!
