With so many cats running around in the house, we also need some toys to keep our dear cats active and trained up. Here are 5 of our best cat toys.
We have tried many different cat toys, but only some do really work for us and our cats. We have listed them below for you and each of them has an extra description of what the product does and how it is used by our cats.
Here is our top 5 Best Cat Toys
Catnip is the main thing for most cats. Not all our cats love or react to Catnip, but most of them see Catnip as a requirement for their toys. The Catnip smells nice for them and it makes them want to play with the toys.
Cat Nip can be bought in different amounts from various brands. There are even ecological brands producing Catnip without any pesticides. Catnip also comes in the form of cat sweets or a spray. The herb version works however best for them.
Catnip is often something that is being put inside the toys. Some toys come with the catnip inside of it, while others require you to do the job. You can alternatively use a catnip spray or rub some catnip herbs into the toy or object. Some toys have a zip or velcro opening, so that they can be filled with fresh Catnip every time.
Kong Kickaroo is a long square piece of fabric that has the possibility for Cat Nip to be put in. They come standard with a tube of catnip to fill them with before giving it to your cat.
Our cats respond heavily on the catnip in the toy. they love to play with it. They will grab it with their nails and take it to their mouth to sniff it.
They throw it around with their paws and hunt it the next moment. They put it under their belly and use their back paws to scratch it or kick it, they roll over it and into it and drool on it.
There are many producers of soft balls, but this one here is the one we use the most for our cats. Our cats simply love it. Especially the kittens go crazy with them. It is like they are playing soccer through the entire room with them. They also catch the balls with their paws or claws. The balls are much smaller than that of a tennis ball.
The balls come in a 3-pack or 4-pack, when you buy them from the shop. I tend to give the cats only one ball at a time, but as soon more than one kitty comes to me for a toy, I give them the others too. (We actually have to buy them per piece in our local pet store).
You would think that cats don’t like to play with balls and only dogs would be busy with it. But our cats really love to play with balls. They push the ball with their paw and they run after the ball the next moment.
Laser pens are also always a big winner with our cats. Not with all cats, I got to be honest about this, but most cats love to play with something red like that, that doesn’t ever get caught. It keeps surprising me how fast they actually are going from the left to the right, up some shelf and down again.
Some of our cats know it is fake, gotten experience with where toys and light comes from and often they attack your hand instead of the red dot on the floor.
Laser Pen’s one can get in most hardware stores, but I linked one from my favourite store Amazon above.
Dart and Bolt Laser Toy
If you rather don’t work and give them toys they can use themselves, you could still think of buying a Dart or similar device.
Dart is a laser toy for lazy people that rather let the cat play and be lazy in the same time. A little motor that rotates the laser and another to change direction in the top makes sure there is movement in random directions and a constant red laser light is all it takes.
The shiny laser dot will move by through the entire room and the cat (or dog) will run after it.
Feather Wand Rod
We got a special wand rod with several pieces of attachable feathers and fluffs. There is a feather type for each preference and cat type. They feathers come in lots of different forms and colours.
The biggest problem with feather toys is that you have to keep a close watch as to what they do with it. It is the type of toy you need to use yourself, or you might see the toy destroyed within seconds. But that doesn’t mean you cannot have fun with this type of toy.
All playful cats and kittens love this toy. They will hunt for it and when they get it, they will bite and lick the feathers as if it was a real bird. Great training for your indoor cats, but also for your outdoor cat if you want them to hunt the outside wildlife less. No guarantees there though, they might feel it is training for later instead.
This type of toy needs your help. The cat prefers if they can hunt the feathers from a distance and prefer a flying and struggling to escape ‘bird’ so you have to be active for your cat to be active.
Without you helping the feathers to fly through the room, your cat will be less interested or just bite the feathers off. In the last matter, I like to warn you that it is best to put this toy safely behind a locked door, so that your cat won’t destroy it while you are gone. We have found out the hard way!
It is a good idea to have cat treats at hand while playing with the feather toy. Each time your cat successfully captures its prey, you could reward your cat with a treat. It is a way of giving them the missing prey.
We have of course a lot of other toys for our cats, but these five are the top 5 best cat toys that our cats really love.
